Zubarev is concerned with the medicalization of the mind and scientific understandings of mental health and mental illness through the use of art. Working with discarded artifacts, paper, and altered books he pieces together found object sculpture, assemblages and collage. His practice also engages experimental video, projections and installation as a means to explore the psychological realm. Zubarev delights in finding subtle and sardonic juxtapositions that splinter the neatly defined categories separating psychopathology and diagnosis from everyday lived experience. His work invites dialogue with contemporary psychology, art in therapy and art as therapy, as well as existential philosophy and the history of psychiatric "outsider" art.
